Here is a link to a good tutorial on focusing basics. Focus basics that deal with the depth of field (DOF) and the details that which consists shallow DOF and deep DOF. Small verses large aperture and the varying distance for each setting. So much to learn to take good quality portraits using a digital DSLR on manual settings. Below is the link. Enjoy!

New Year! Time to master camera settings!
I learned aperture settings in a more simplistic way by reading a book called Master Aperture in Digital Photography: The Art of Controlling Depth of Field by FreeDigitalPhotogrpahyTutorials.com. It can be downloaded thru Amazon.com. This book was recommended by Sue Bryce. Its an awesome book and she is an awesome photographer! Love her!
Looking forward to all the fun that will begin this year! More shooting, practice makes perfect! I learned in martial arts class a long time ago, repetition is the mother of all skills.
The book covered the Aperture settings very well. Not that other books didn't its just this one made it click! The picture below could have been better if I had set my camera to manual setting. Aperture was F/3.2 Shutter speed at 1/400 at ISO 250. I was using my 70-200mm lens. Wish I had brought my Macro lens along.
